At least you don’t have brain freezes, like Rick Perry’s problem the other night. I think a brain freeze is similar to writer’s block: they are both like being in quicksand. The harder you try to think of something, the harder it pulls you down. I would recommend doing something else for a while, and your brain will open up to new thoughts.

Next cartoon you do about writers block should show the slow rise in panic as any number of writing deadlines draw near and attempt to storm the road block. Mob hysteria! Then, of course, light bulbs go off over the cartoon people’s heads because that in and of itself becomes the next story. The cartoons are cute! I loved the “eyes” for you caricature! 🙂
I am blogger not a writer (I have been given visible, verbal and silent smirks if i let the word writer slip in) and if there is a term like Blogger’s Block I would be first in line with not only a block but a BLOCK. I started my blog trying to do a ” Julie and Julia” with one blog per day, but after 50 odd blogs and poetry (mostly in Hindi, my national language) I started hitting block after block after block! 🙂
And here is the joke I actually signed up for NaNoWriMo too!

As I was saying to Sophia Loren (this was years ago, when I worked in her stables), it’s not that I run out of things to say, it’s that I sometimes sit in front of the typewriter or a blank page and a sense of heaviness overcomes me. Well, actually, it’s more than a sense, since at the time I weighed 300 pounds and I’m barely 5’10”. But the effort to write seems so great. Then she would lead me off to one of the stalls, and all of the sudden I’d have loads of energy. But it never seemed to last. By the time we had uh cleaned out the stall, I’d be as full of torpor as I was before.
She gave me the stable job because I told her that I needed something to hold me over while I worked on my screenplay. It was a Western that was going to take place in Scotland (one of the so-called “Haggis Westerns”). She wanted to star in it. When after 6 months I had produced nothing, she realized I was as full of shit as I’d allowed her stables to become, and she booted me out on my ass.
Sigh.

Cute illustration! Been there many times. It’s funny though, when you find your passion in life – writers’ block becomes – “let me watch a movie so I can turn it off,” the mind writing that is. Now I have to force my mind to stop writing for a while.
When I started writing about domestic violence, my mind froze in the beginning. I was afraid to allow people to see my writing actually – I did not think it was that good. But, writing, writing, writing makes your craft come alive. Kick the block to the curb and just write!
By the way, congratulations!

Congratulations on being freshly pressed!
I reckon you need a bulldozer.
I can totally associate with your writer’s block. I have loads of ideas and am ok when I actually focus, but could see myself being very British and queuing with a deck chair, flask and sandwiches…

Congrats on being Freshly Pressed! My biggest fear as a blogger/writer is staring at a blank page when I begin a post. The hardest part for me is getting started; but once I do there’s no telling where I’ll stop.
Great post!

Congrats on being Freshly Pressed! Whenever I come to a “writer’s block” I just envision myself as the girl from Resident Evil. I imagine starting an uprising with the other writers in the line and we overtake the guard and kick down the blockade. Works every time! 🙂

I’m in a slump, too. It snuck up on me while I was editing existing stories, and then I suddenly realized that I hadn’t written anything fresh in four weeks. Insidious….

I am so with you on that. I had a blog for 9 years, deleted it due to disputes (parents reading it), and now I have started again, I sit there looking at my Mac, with all the ideas in my notes, and think, mmm once sentence does not a blog make.

LOL, great cartoons! You depicted writer’s block very well! As a poetry writer and blogger I have found that my greatest inspiration comes when I’m not even thinking about it….keep pushing!

This is the first time I’ve been moved to comment on a blog (I’m new to this place). I really love the cartoon (like really). You seem to be making the best of your block! Maybe have your cartoon character cut in the writer’s block line: who does she cut in front of? What do they talk about? I bet they’re texting someone… so, what are they saying?
This might not help, but it might help, too.

Thank you! And yes, maybe the Writer’s Block will become a serial comic that I can go back to whenever I’m feeling uninspired.

I am experiencing the same thing that real writers experience. Maybe I can call myself a writer. This is too funny.

Writers block- the mental traffic jam. The cartoon is great and really describes what’s it’s like. That long and winding queue is never fun…in the metaphorical sense of course. Great post.

Well if whenever you get writer’s block you just post funny blogs like this, you’ll never have writer’s block. Very funny cartoon.

Congrats on being freshly pressed and double congrats on the great comment. While not very helpful, I feel like real writers block could at least be beneficial to take out some of your frustrations on.

The WordPress staff hand-picks the Freshly Pressed blogs. I’m sure there is a certain amount of luck to whether or not they come across your blog combined with how topical your posts are and your tags.
